I just saw the living legend, Daphne Guinness' exhibition at the Museum at FIT & it was completely awe inspiring. Guinness, Anna Dello Russo & Isabella Blow are the three women in fashion who truly take my breath away & shake me to the core. Happy new year! It's been ages since I've done an outfit post & now seems as good a time as any. Doing more outfit posts was inspired more by moving to New York than it being a whole new year. I feel much more confident since settling in here than I ever did in San Francisco, which is odd since this city is known for being much more critical & cutthroat. I guess New York & I just speak the same language. More people here seem to notice what I'm wearing, introducing themselves & wanting to know who I am, where I'm from, what I'm doing here. It's been a fantastic experience so far. I'm more inspired to experiment with new looks & playing around snapping photos on my rooftop.

These leggings from Actual Pain have definitely been a conversation starter. I got them during my Chrismukkah trip in Seattle, where the A.P. warehouse is located. The rest of the outfit are favorite pieces that I've had for a long time. The pentagram cuff is Pamela Love, wedges by Allsaints, blouse by Helmut Lang, asymmetrical cardigan by Barlow & dripped aviators by Ann-Sophie Back.

Last night I had the pleasure of joining my friend Rika to Joomi Lim's sample sale in Chelsea. Ms. Lim's chained, spiked & bejeweled jewelry is really taking off right now. Shops like Opening Ceremony are stocked with her pieces & Rihanna's a big fan, rocking Joomi's pieces while promoting her new album.

I love Joomi Lim's mix of tough & luxe.

I picked up the turquoise number left of center. It's one of my fave things I've purchased in quite a while. Rihanna has a few of the gold & leather chokers on the far right.

Hey Rika.

What I like about her pieces is that they look fab alone or stacked together. They also transition really well with being casual during the day & a powerful statement at night. The bangles & bracelets I got look great with pieces I already have. The other great thing about Joomi is that she really connects with her customers. A while back Rika lost her favorite Joomi ring & wrote about it on her blog. Later Joomi read it & sent Rika a couple replacement pieces. That's so sweet! How many designers have done that? Needless to say, I'm a big fan.

today was the first day i've woken up & truly missed SF. it doesn't even have to do with the weather here on the east coast, cuz it actually hasn't even been that bad. both coasts have been having a similar winter, actually. it hasn't been seriously cold, but you definitely need a little something to cover yourself up -especially at nite. that's why i'm all about capes right now. they're the perfect mix of cosy & casual. what really set it off for me was the one i saw kate moss rockin in london (photo below.) god, i want that leather cape in my life so bad!! but the ones featured above are definitely after my own heart as well!

well, hello! long time no see! i've been seriously neglecting the blog this past year & haven't posted anything for close to two months. a lot's been happening in my personal life that's been distracting me from writing. the most recent distraction was moving to new york from san francisco. the last two years in sf was difficult because after bouncing around from a bunch of different schools, jobs & social scenes for eight years, nothing was sticking. the blog really took off in the first year, but in this second year i was debating if this was something i wanted to keep as a hobby or make a profession. as happy & proud as i was (& still am) of my friends music/art/fashion lines/blogs being successful, it was getting more & more depressing that my own projects were barely making it off the ground. i blamed sf, i blamed myself & i let my emotions run wild. my last year in sf was like the end of a serious relationship where all the cities idiosyncrasies that i used to find charming became excruciating, like nails on a chalk board. i didn't want to break up, so i thought that if i just stayed still & waited it out that somehow everything would magically fix itself. nothing is ever that easy. they say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over & expecting a different result, & in september it became clear that it would take some big changes in order for my life to get better.

the big motivating drive was listening to leandra from the man repeller speak at the independent fashion bloggers conference at the beginning of september fashion week. she spoke about how to have a successful blog, you really need to have a strong voice & original content. it dawned on me that i'd lost my voice, both in my blog & my personal life. i'd been letting problems with friends & work slide instead of speaking up for myself & handling issues in a proactive way. i would bottle everything up inside until i'd explode. at the time of the blogging conference, i still wasn't sure where to go with this blog, but listening to leandra's words of wisdom inspired me to make changes in any way possible. when i got back from new york fashion week, i knew it was time to confront my problems & fears head-on & take control. moving to new york was the scariest thing i've done in ages, but it was all for the best.

i was instantly filled with relief when i landed in brooklyn. for as long as i could remember, i was dwelling on the past & stressing about the unknown future. & i'll admit that there's been plenty of times where i've compared sf to ny & felt "good riddance!" but with every day that passes, i see that both cities are excellent & it's petty to compare the two. i'm very lucky to live in both. saying goodbye to the bay wasn't easy & i'm not happy with the way i ended it with the people i care about, but hopefully it will be resolved with time. right now i've been able to breathe, decompress & simply enjoy the moment. i can see infinite possibilities in the city & i'm confident that i'll be able to find my niche, groove or whatever you want to call it. i want to take all my past mistakes & channel it into becoming a person i'm proud of. i want to gain back my self confidence & make people happy.

The Love Brigade

so far, i've been getting to know the city, hanging out with friends & partying a lot. my new apartment in brooklyn is taking shape & feeling like home. i still haven't found a bed, but as i'm writing this, my new desk is on it's way for delivery. having a real office space will definitely motivate me to write more. as far as big plans, i'm looking into going back to school for photography. it's my first love & the main thing i'm really good at. there's still some room for improvement & i think taking some classes will help spark some much needed inspiration & build useful connections. i'd like to improve my skills & find a job as a photographers assistant to gain more experience. blogging has always been good to me as well, & i'm ready to give it another go. i don't know how far i want to go with it, but having a place where i can express myself thru fashion & photography is a good thing. i'm excited to see what happens in 2012.

iris van herpen is a 27 year old couture designer from amsterdam. she started her own label in 2007 after interning at alexander mcqueen in london & claudy jongstra in amsterdam. even before reading that she'd interned with mcqueen, i could already get a complete vibe from her designs. like the late mcqueen, iris' designs mix nature & futurism in an awe inspiring way. the detail & craftsmanship in each of her pieces is incredible. & don't even get me started on those shoes for united nude. her garments are begging to be seen up close. i'm curious to see a close up of the detailing & to get an idea of how much each dress weighs. i'm totally blown away.

i'm in love. we've been dating off & on for almost a year now, come september. we get each other. he understands me in a way nobody else has & i feel electric in his company. we have our ups & downs. even after our rough patch in february, i knew it wasn't over between us. long distance is tough. i thought about him all the time; wondering what he was up to & if he missed me. last week i took a chance & came out to say hi & reconnect. i'm happy to say that we've started to see eye to eye again & let me tell you something, it's fantastic! so fantastic in fact, we've decided to move in together!

that's right, the city & i are in love with each other & i'm moving to new york!!

i spent last week kickin' it all over manhattan, visiting old friends, partying it up & getting a glimpse at apartment options & the job market. the idea to move to new york has been in my mind for years, & it became more intense during fashion week in february. after surviving the bitter cold almost six months ago, i've come to realize that i'm not living a full life in san francisco. finding steady work in fashion & publishing has been difficult & my passion for updating this blog has dried up. there's so much to love about san francisco & it's helped me grow immensely in the past eight years. but sad to say, i think i've outgrown this city. i need a change & to step up my game. i want to do much more than just blogging & the best place to get shakin' in fashion is in new york. i'm ridiculously excited!

MIB IMMORTALIZED IN NYC!

first thing first, i had to make my mark in the city - literally! it was a proud moment, for sure.

THE BIG KIDS PLAYGROUND

i spent the week at my favorite hotel, the standard. this place is bananas. multiple night clubs, restaurants & an endless amount of mayhem. there's parties going on almost every night & the people watching is outta control. the first night i saw joe zee, creative director of elle & a few nights later there was an after party for justin timberlake & mila kunis' new movie. a couple days after that i literally bumped into gareth pugh. i was in hog heaven that whole week!

CHARGE IT

naturally i did a little shopping. the pieces i picked up at topshop & oak were a motley mix of prints & textures. the diane von furstenberg flagship is just around the corner from my hotel in the meatpacking district so of course i had to peek my head inside. her tees & accessories immediately grabbed my attention & the andy warhol portrait scarf was a must-have. the boutique also had a nice literary selection including the memoir of alek wek, the sudanese refugee who's now an international supermodel. i've been wanting to read her book for ages.

one afternoon i sat down with anna sheffield at her studio to check out her latest jewelry collection from bing bang & her pricer made to order line. i'm a big fan of bing bang's treasures. i couldn't resist picking out the unicorn stud earrings for myself. i also got better acquainted with anna's namesake collection, pictured below. the horse hooves & talon pieces are striking yet understated. i also gravitated towards the teardrop chained bangles pictured second to last. they're made to fit the wrist without too much jiggling & can be personalized by adding your own extra bracelets in between the chain. i had a great time taking a peek at the beautiful presentation. check out her awesome tumblr blog for daily inspiration.

SAVAGE BEAUTY

the alexander mcqueen exhibit at the metropolitan museum was like delving into another realm. it was beyond divine. each room encapsulated various stages of lee's career, from central saint martins to givenchy to his final full collection while alive, the incredible plato's atlantis. there were also pieces from sarah burton's first collection after taking the reigns. i could live in the accessories room featuring many of philip treacy's hats, harnesses & video footage of mcqueen's major runway moments. the whole experience was raw, sinister & sensual.

so there's a little taste of the big apple! stay tuned for the inside scoop on new york fashion week in september! i hope to pump up this blog in the meantime & give this site the t.l.c. it definitely needs. this blog is about to go full throttle so hold on tight! xox

it's been a while since we last caught up, non? so much has happened, i almost don't know where to begin. well, three weeks ago i had the pleasure to see public relations mother wolf, kelly cutrone, do a book signing at books, inc. she was candid, down to earth & had no problem getting deeply personal at times even to us total strangers. yet when you're in the presence of this woman, nobody feels like a stranger. what first attracted me to this woman in the fashion world was her ability to cut thru the bullshit & connect us to something much deeper, with style. she mixes the personal with the political & encourages everyone to be the best versions of ourselves as we can.

she made a valid point in her latest book, "normal gets you nowhere" that women make up 65 percent of world spending & more than 80 percent of usa spending, which in a capitalist world means that we account for a lot. us women currently hold a hell of a lot more power than we might think. where we spend our money, everything from independent to corporate businesses, organic foods, products that test on animals... every dollar means something. not only that, but all of our actions (& denial) mean something too. wearing nice clothes can make you feel beautiful on the inside, but being compassionate from within makes you infinitely more beautiful on the outside. so i've made up a list of my favorite causes & charities in the right sidebar. check 'em out, consider getting involved in something, & feel free to leave a comment about what causes are important to you. the world could use some help from stylish, savvy, socially conscious babes like ourselves!

i got a new tattoo of the title of one of my favorite books by charles bukowski. life's pain is inevitable, but how we choose to deal with it is our own journey. doug from everlasting tattoo took my original design to the next level & was so gentle, i barely felt anything.

the front porch in the mission district bangs out southern comfort food that most certainly feeds the soul. cafe claude is country french fare done right. i prefer country french to the more popular french cooking because it's less buttery & heavy but still has loads of flavor. cafe claude is located in a little alleyway around union square & feels like the hideaway restaurants i hung out in paris last year.

i've been listening to a lot of dramatic music lately. either super light effervescent bubble pop songs, badass bitch power anthems or the more wrist-slashing emotionally wrecked variety. adele, lykke li, robyn, beyonce, salt'n'pepa & britney... leonard cohen, john frusciante, & daniel johnston. musical moodswings fo sho.

sometimes all i want is to be able to take a vacation from myself. lately i don't know where my head is at. i've been acting in ways that i don't fully understand & have a difficult time controlling. acting like a wicked cunt when i want to be kind, procrastinating on proper blog posts & acting like i don't care about anyone or anything when i really really do... i say & do all the wrong things at all the wrong times, without any warning & i'm actually just as shocked as anyone else as to why i just did what i did. i'm sure i've been totally delightful to friends, family, fellow bloggers & anyone else in my path. my friend ian thinks that i think i don't deserve to be happy, & maybe there's some truth to that. mostly i think that lately it's subconsciously been a lot simpler to destroy everything around me instead of facing each person & opportunity with my full attention. & maybe when you get used to disappointment & dishonesty, it's easier to go on the defensive & assume everything's just not going to work out anyway, so who cares? but i do care & every day i try to start fresh (but still own up & apologize for my mistakes) & try to look on the positive side. putting together blog posts like these help - i can see that on a weekly basis there's a lot of fun things to look forward to & reality isn't as scary as what goes on in my head. sometimes we can be our own worst enemy, but we can also be our own personal saviors.

this weekend the factory had an awesome customized leather jacket event. the factory by the evans group are a super cool fashion production company that can take any idea you have for a perfect garment & turn it into a reality. bring in some images from a magazine or a sample of a garment that you'd like to change up somehow, & the factory can help design & produce it for you! they also have plenty of fantastic pieces hanging throughout their shop for your instant pleasure. the factory is a great concept, the staff is killer & their parties are always ace.

the chillin productions 13th anniversary party at mezzanine this weekend was good times. it's always high energy at these independent market parties & full of variety from 100's of vendors & artists. there's so much to discover & fondle over, but that nite i was mesmerized by the astronauts orbiting outside.

brooklyn's dj duo creep made their san francisco debut on sunday at public works. i've been loving their latest single "days" & must admit to having a major musical crush on lauren flax. the set felt very intimate & special.

yeah, so that's a little of what's been going on with me. i know i say this all the time, but i really am going to try to get better at updating this site more often. i've been thinking a lot about what my goals are with this blog & what i can do to challenge myself & make this site better. if you have any suggestions, don't be shy. i hope you all had a great memorial day weekend & here's hoping for a fantastic week!

for all you street style lovers out there, if you haven't heard of style & the city by now, you should! founded in october 2007 by photographer kamel lahmadi, it was the first ever french street style blog which has gone on to cover both paris & new york fashion week street style. in order to create trends instead of following them, kamel & his business partner created an iphone/ipad app. to show what's currently going on in the streets. it's such a hit that it has beaten out some of the biggest fashion apps. in just three weeks! it's a super fun, sleek & chic app that any street style fan will j'adore. style & the city has been kind enough to let fans of my blog to download the app. for free until june!

a little monday nite dancing to start the week off right...

hanging out around the embarcadero with my friend michelle...

on thursday a couple of my friends & i got photographed for the noh8 campaign @ the w hotel...

later on that night, there was a launch party for refinery 29 sf @ sloane...

on saturday one of my favorite contemporary artists (& bay area native &&& mr. bjork) matthew barney received the perseverance of vision award at sf int'l film festival. "thank you for this award. i guess i'll take it home & sit on it," he said before showing his latest work "drawing restraint 17" with a q&a following...

later on in the evening there was explode la mode fashion show @ som bar...

the first two looks immediately caught my attention because they each had detachable elements & could be worn a couple different ways

this skirt is amazing! i want/need it in my life!

it was one of the best fashion shows i've been to in a while. all of the designers were new to me, with a few familiar model's faces. plenty of the looks were completely wearable & i could see a lot of sf girls rocking various pieces.

& finally to close out the weekend was capsule design fest in hayes valley. i go every year & there's always a big crowd & new vendors...

TOP FIVE REASONS WHY FASHION BLOGGERS SHOULD HAVE A TUMBLR

so, like i mentioned in my previous post, i've become all about tumblr these days & let me tell you why:

1. a ton of fashion bloggers, magazines & industry-related people are already on it: vogue magazine, stefano gabbana, tavi & dazed digital, just to name a few. by following them, not only do you get another view into their world, you also connect with them & make your presence known in a way that other blogs don't. once you follow a tumblr blog, said blogger more than likely gets an email saying you're following them, so they're already onto you. & every time you reblog or like one of their posts they get a notice as well, so unlike other blog formats, you don't have to constantly leave comments on their page in the hopes that they'll check you out. subtle daily interactions with other bloggers & magazines thru tumblr is a great way to get noticed without trying too hard. conversely, having your own tumblr will allow new people to follow you & get to know you in another way.

2. talk about inspiration! tumblr blogs pull from so many sources & give you a wide variety of fashion editorials, advertisements, street style, backstage photos & beyond. plenty of wordpress & blogger blogs often give you the latest on what's in the magazines & happening right now, but tumblr is great because it shows you fashion from everywhere, from any time. while fashion blogging is about staying up on the times, tumblr is helpful in giving you a taste of the past. seeing reblogged photos & advertisements of designers help give you a better idea of where they've been & where they are now.

post friendly reminders about following your main blog, twitter, youtube, etc.

3. tumblr is another way to get your blog posts out into the world. plenty of fashion bloggers such as fashion chalet will put their latest link up from their main blog & other links to things they're involved in onto their tumblr, as shown above. one of my main problems with blogger, wordpress, etc. is that readers have to be dedicated enough to check back for updates or follow you on bloglovin', which if they follow a lot of blogs, can leave you lost in the mix. even i don't go thru my bloglovin' enough cuz going thru each individual blog can be tedious, & if you have a fanpage on facebook, your fans have to be online around the time that you post to even see it. my fanpage has around 600 followers but i've noticed that my updates only get about 200 impressions from each time, which means that more than half of my readers don't even know what's up. if you have readers on the other side of the world, they might be asleep or something when you post on facebook. with tumblr, all your blog posts are seamlessly connected on one page which makes it easier for readers to keep current on what you're doing & reblog.

4. speaking of staying up to date, tumblr is great for linking up with apps thru your phone for easy on-the-go updates. i've become really into instagram (which a lot of bloggers are on as well) & tumblr makes it easy for you to connect the app so readers can see what you're up to as it happens. the coveted used instagram this weekend to post about the fashion at coachella & profresh style uses instagram to post outfit "skeletons" of what she's wearing that day. while it might be too much to post a couple times a day on your main blog, it's perfectly alright to update as many times as you like on tumblr so you can take photos to your hearts content. you can also connect your tumblr to your twitter account & queue your posts so that readers are updated a few times a day & not all at once.

5. the moral of the story is that becoming a successful fashion blogger is about having a presence on the internet in more than one way. nowadays it takes more than just posting daily & commenting on others pages. twitter, tumblr, facebook fan pages, instagram, lookbook.nu, chictopia, foursquare, etc. are all ways of making your presence known. all these avenues might be overwhelming altogether, but the more you put yourself out there, the more likely new people are going to find out about you & become a fan. with so many blogs out there, not many people are going to go searching for you, you have to make yourself searchable to them. so the more you put your name out there in different ways, the more likely your fan base will grow & opportunities will arise.

ps. i've said it before & i'll say it again... even tho i've been a tad bit obsessie with tumblr, i AM going to start posting more frequently on here again! i promise! little ol' me has a.d.d.!

hey guys, i'm still working on my techie "wired wednesday" post for today but it's taking longer than i thought so i'll just post it tomorrow. i'm starting to get tired with blogger. photos often take ages & ages to upload & i'm losing my cool, plus i'm enjoying the up-to-the-minute mini posts via tumblr. i just don't have much patience lately to stay home & spend all day on one single post. i'm also thinking about branching out to writing about more than just fashion. i'd like to make mimosas in bed more about san francisco culture: music, art, fashion, technology... bits of everything. so yeah, i'm not moving to nyc anymore like i thought either. i'm more than okay with that, but now i'm having to rethink my goals & what i want to do my life. i'm having a second wind of love for the bay area & want to spend most of my time out & about, doing the most. posting on here daily just isn't much of a priority to me right now. i think spending more time away from the computer will actually help this blog in the long run anyway. for now all i can handle is little bits of inspiration on tumblr & having a social life far away from facebook. so bare with me a lil longer while i werk it all out. feel free to follow me on twitter @mimosasinbed & mimosasinbed.tumblr.com & check back tomorrow for the belated wired wednesday post. for now enjoy a new music video by pj harvey

the other day i'm sitting in the park with my friend monica, & of course the subject of clothes comes up. she was frustrated with sometimes buying items that turn out to be hard to mix in with the rest of her wardrobe -if she could even find what she wanted to wear around her room. we've all been there & i'm happy to say, there's an app for every predicament! so maybe it's a bit obsessie to keep track of every single item in your wardrobe, but if you have a large collection of jewelry or shoes, maybe keeping track of them on your phone might not be a bad idea. kimora lee is known for taking polaroids of every pair of shoes she owns & sticking them on the outside of their boxes for easy reference. well these apps can work in the same way. you can avoid having a near death experience every time you want to peek through a box that's high up in your closet or having to tear your room apart while putting together an outfit. all of these apps provide an easy way to categorize your closet & plan out daily ensembles.

'shoe closet' is so cute with it's doors that open when you double tap your finger

all of these apps (except 'touch closet') allow you to keep track of your outfits on a calender, so you can plan for trips or avoid repeats. 'closet lite' has added tools for you to make packing lists & stats to see how often you wear each item. 'stylebook' has the option for you to add inspiration photos & gives you advice on how to take a good digital photo of your clothes. 'closet lite,' 'touch closet,' & 'mystyle' allow you to back up your data for safety & all of the apps have options to share your looks with friends through email & what have you. picking the right app mostly just comes down to prices & aesthetics. 'closet lite' & 'pocket closet' are inexpensive, sleek & to the point. i like that 'closet lite' allows you to preview the app first (up to 16 items & 4 outfits) to see if you like it. the real 'closet' app is only $2.99, the price of a cup of coffee, whereas 'touch closet' is a whopping $9.99 & doesn't have any sort of lite app to preview & there's nothing extra special about it that validates the price. i honestly have no clue as to why it's ten bucks. 'my style' & 'stylebook' are mid-priced apps but are made for uber sartorialists with better graphics & a girlie feel. 'stylish girl' is free, but has more bells & whistles than all of them: there's a fashion mall to buy clothes thru the app, a fashion lounge to get inspiration & a wish bag. the only app i wasn't fond of was 'mystyle' because you immediately have to sign up for an account even before you have a chance to look thru it & it made my phone freak out with automatic syncing & push notifications. if you're simply a shoe gal, check out 'shoe closet' to organize your collection by occasion. the app is simple & to the point, organizing by color, type & occasion. if you could categorize by brand as well, this app would be perfect.

final recommendations:

for the bare necessities at a fair price, try 'closet lite' or 'pocket closet'

for shopping, sharing & inspiration go with 'stylish girl' for free

solely into shoes, check out 'shoe closet'

i'm sorry for those of you 'droid heads out there! i'm working on getting familiar with other apps & phones besides what's available on itunes, just bare with me! for the most part, though, the only way to know which app works best for you is to try them out -no matter what kind of phone you have.

this is a great lil video just in time for the warm weather. the braided scarf is such a great idea, i wish i had more hair to work with! but the 2nd to last turbin might work. for a while i was rocking the 'rosie the riveter' look, i should really bring it back.

CHARITY FASHION SHOW GOES FULL BLAST IN SAN FRANCISCO

loads of fashion fans from all around the bay area came out to charity fashion show on saturday. with 40 designers spanning four different continents & more than 1,200 people in the audience, this was a massive event & the largest of it's kind on the west coast. with so many designers it's hard to highlight each individual one, so here's my photo recap of the whole thing. i will say, that for a two hour show thom scher & his crew did an amazing job of keeping each collection running smoothly & keeping the audience engaged. the show had a sizable mix of menswear, resort wear, fall looks, swimwear & a short video by kittenhawk jewelry, there really was something for everyone that night.
